What our customers say

My 91 year old dad’s water heater was leaking all over the place. HEP came the same day I called. Kyler was friendly, thorough, professional and gave us all our options. He repaired the leak while there and scheduled a new water heater installation 2 days later. We are very pleased!

So we're finishing half of our basement and got ahold of HEP for some advice on tankless water heaters to try and save some space. Less than 24 hours later Kyler was at the house and had an answer for every question and 2 or 3 options for every scenario I ran by him. After about an hour he had us a plan in budget that we could live with. Next business day Robbie was out bright and early and had us taken care of in a matter of hours. Guys are clean, friendly, do neat work, sell a much better product that we replaced and seem to care about what they do. Higher priced compared to a smaller one man operation but I've got piece of mind on what was completed and there's no price tag for that. Appreciate the HEP guys!

I am very impressed with the service I received from HEP. I recently had them install a tankless water heater and relocate the hookups to my basement. This left a hole in the ceiling from the vent, some holes in the floor for the old piping, as well as an unfinished piece of flooring where the old hot water heater used to sit. The quote I received wasn't specific to either include or exclude the time of a dry waller to match the stamped patter of my ceiling surface or for someone to come out and replace a piece of subfloor AND lay new laminate flooring. I didn't have to argue. I am used to having to argue to get good service from contractors and HEP just did the work no questions asked. In addition to the plumbing work they sent out two separate service calls to fix the ceiling and the floor and the space looks like there was never a hot water heater to begin with. I'm sure that those additional trips ate into their planned budget/profit of the water heater installation but since the quote and contract weren't specific they just did the work without any push back! I will definitely be spending my money with HEP in the future because I trust that they have integrity with their work and they aren't just in it for a quick buck. They are obviously looking to build relationships for lifelong customers. I will be that lifelong customer. I already have another quote with them for another project in the works.

Athens Homes and the Rise of Tankless Water Heaters

Athens has long been celebrated for its blend of historic neighborhoods, modern infill construction, and a vibrant university atmosphere. That variety in architectural styles places unique demands on residential plumbing systems. One solution rising to meet those demands is the tankless water heater, a compact appliance that delivers hot water on-demand rather than storing it in a bulky reservoir. HEP specializes in turnkey tankless water heater installation throughout Athens, adapting the latest technology to the city’s diverse housing stock.

Why Many Athens Residents Prefer Tankless Units

  • Unlimited hot water supply, even during back-to-back showers
  • Space savings in smaller intown cottages and townhomes
  • Reduced standby energy loss because water isn’t continually reheated
  • Longer service life when maintained according to manufacturer guidelines
  • Modern digital controls that integrate with smart home platforms

Energy Efficiency in the Humid Georgia Climate

Athens averages nearly 220 days of high humidity, which can drive up utility bills as traditional tank heaters fight ambient moisture. A tankless unit avoids continual reheating, cutting down on heat loss through the tank walls. HEP’s technicians evaluate household water usage patterns and recommend models with optimal Uniform Energy Factor (UEF) ratings. The result is lower kilowatt-hour consumption during peak summer months and consistent performance during crisp winter mornings.

How HEP Executes a Precision Tankless Water Heater Install

An effective installation hinges on careful planning as much as on the final hookup. HEP follows a structured workflow designed to align with local codes and manufacturer specifications.

Pre-Installation Assessment and Load Calculation

  1. Gather household data: number of occupants, bathrooms, and simultaneous hot water fixtures
  2. Analyze flow rates for showers, dishwashers, and washing machines
  3. Determine required gallons-per-minute (GPM) and temperature rise
  4. Inspect existing gas or electrical infrastructure to verify capacity

Selecting the Right BTU Rating for Athens Homes

Natural gas lines in older Athens properties often require upsizing to achieve adequate BTU delivery for high-efficiency tankless units. HEP’s licensed plumbers calculate:

  • Minimum and maximum BTU range for projected demand
  • Distance from meter to appliance to mitigate pressure drop
  • Pipe sizing, considering elevation changes common in East Athens hills

Safe Removal of Legacy Storage Tanks

When replacing a 40- or 50-gallon storage heater, the crew:

  • Drains the tank fully to prevent accidental scalding
  • Uses specialized dollies and lift straps in tight basement stairwells
  • Recycles steel components according to Clarke County environmental guidelines

Venting and Gas Line Configuration for Tankless Units

Tankless gas heaters require Category III or IV venting materials resistant to condensing exhaust. HEP’s approach includes:

  • Isolating the flue path to avoid interference with HVAC ductwork
  • Installing concentric vent kits through exterior walls or the roof deck
  • Laying out gas lines with drip legs and sediment traps for code compliance

Post-Install Testing and Calibration

After physical installation, technicians:

  1. Conduct a leak-down test on all gas joints using digital manometers
  2. Program temperature set points within safe limits (typically 120 °F)
  3. Verify ignition sequences and flame strength with combustion analyzers
  4. Demonstrate user interface features and maintenance intervals to occupants

Key Technical Advantages Delivered by HEP Plumbing Professionals

  • Rigorous adherence to ANSI Z21.10.3 standards for water heater safety
  • Utilization of dielectric unions to block galvanic corrosion
  • Incorporation of isolation valves for simplified annual descaling
  • Application of seismic straps in line with Georgia Building Code in high-risk zones

Environmental Impact and Sustainability

Tankless water heaters reduce landfill waste by eliminating large steel tanks that must be replaced every decade. Moreover, decreased energy consumption results in lower greenhouse gas emissions. HEP furthers sustainability by:

  • Offering condensing models that reach up to 0.97 UEF
  • Recycling copper and brass fittings removed from legacy systems
  • Advising homeowners on water-saving fixtures that complement demand-type heaters

Common Placement Options Inside Athens Residences

Indoor Wall-Mounted Installations

Ideal for:

  • Renovated bungalows with limited crawlspace height
  • Condominium mechanical closets near plumbing chases

Exterior Installations with Freeze Protection

Suited to:

  • Homes on narrow in-town lots where interior space is at a premium
  • Houses with adequate overhangs and access to gas supply at meter

Attic or Garage Installations

Chosen for:

  • New construction where venting can be routed vertically in a single run
  • Properties with detached workshops requiring their own hot water source

HEP evaluates ventilation, condensate drainage, and service accessibility before finalizing unit location.

Water Quality Considerations in Clarke County

Athens municipal water typically measures between 6–7 grains per gallon of hardness. Even moderate hardness can accumulate in the high-heat exchangers of tankless units. HEP mitigates mineral buildup by:

  • Installing inline scale inhibition filters
  • Recommending annual vinegar or citric-acid flushes
  • Monitoring total dissolved solids (TDS) during routine maintenance visits

By controlling hardness, the efficiency of the heat exchanger remains high, and operating noise is reduced.

Maintenance and Longevity Strategies

Annual Service Protocol

  • Inspect and clean inlet water screens
  • Check burner assembly for carbon deposits
  • Perform full descaling of heat exchanger
  • Update firmware on digital controller, if applicable

Homeowner Best Practices

  • Keep intake vents free of debris and pet hair
  • Run periodic high-flow hot water cycles to prevent stagnation
  • Record any error codes and note operational anomalies for technicians

With these combined efforts, many tankless units installed by HEP reach 20+ years of reliable service.

The HEP Plumbing Team and Their Certifications

Every installer assigned to a tankless project holds:

  • Georgia State Plumbing License or reciprocal certification
  • Manufacturer-specific training certificates for brands installed
  • OSHA 10-hour safety credentials
  • Ongoing education in evolving combustion analysis standards

This training ensures precise gas pressure settings and safe venting practices, both critical for tankless performance.

Permitting and Code Compliance in Athens

Clarke County mandates permits for any water heater replacement involving fuel gas or electrical work. HEP handles:

  1. Permit application submission with equipment specifications
  2. Coordination of on-site inspection dates with local officials
  3. Documentation of as-built venting diagrams
  4. Final sign-off to validate warranty eligibility

By streamlining paperwork, homeowners avoid delays and unexpected red tags.

Signs It’s Time to Switch to Tankless

  • Household demands exceed storage tank recovery rate
  • Rust flecks observed in hot water at faucet aerators
  • Audible popping sounds during heating cycles indicating sediment buildup
  • Limited space for renovation projects due to bulky tank footprint
  • Interest in eco-friendly upgrades for property value enhancement

When multiple symptoms align, HEP’s consultants provide load analysis and cost-benefit projections tailored to each Athens residence.

Myths About Tankless Water Heaters Addressed by HEP Technicians

Myth 1: Tankless Units Provide Instant Hot Water at the Tap

The appliance heats water instantly, but delivery time still depends on pipe length. HEP offers recirculation pumps when immediate delivery is crucial.

Myth 2: Tankless Systems Can’t Keep Up with Large Families

Proper sizing and possible parallel installation of multiple units enable continuous supply, even for households with four or more bathrooms.

Myth 3: Maintenance Isn’t Necessary

Without annual descaling, efficiency declines. HEP integrates isolation valves during installation to simplify flush routines.

Tools and Materials Used by HEP

  • Combustion analyzer calibrated to trace CO levels
  • ProPress and press-fit copper systems for quick, flame-free joints
  • Flexible stainless steel venting for complex angles
  • Digital torque wrenches to ensure correct ft-lb on gas fittings
  • Non-contact infrared thermometers for temperature verification

Each tool enhances precision, minimizes installation time, and safeguards property.

Soft Benefits for Athens Property Owners

  • Freed-up floor space becomes extra storage or utility area
  • Quieter operation eliminates the rumble associated with tank reheating
  • Potential eligibility for energy-efficiency rebates and green certification points
  • Modern aesthetics that complement upscale bathroom remodels

Residents often cite these intangible gains as added justification for upgrading to tankless technology facilitated by HEP.

Seasonal Performance and Freeze Protection

Athens occasionally experiences winter lows below freezing. Tankless units installed outside or in unconditioned spaces include:

  • Built-in electric freeze protection elements
  • Self-draining features that activate during power outages when installed with HEP’s optional drain-down valves
  • Insulated pipe sleeves to prevent burst lines in exposed crawlspaces

Pre-installation site surveys confirm that protective measures are matched to specific microclimates, whether in Normaltown, Five Points, or the outskirts near Watkinsville.

Warranty Support and Documentation Process with HEP

Manufacturers require installation photographs, serial numbers, and proof of permitted work to validate long-term heat exchanger warranties. HEP catalogs:

  • High-resolution images of vent terminations and gas shutoff points
  • Digital copies of permit approvals and pressure test logs
  • Customer-facing maintenance checklists to preserve warranty status

This organized documentation ensures eligibility for replacement parts and factory technical support throughout the life of the unit.

Integration with Smart Home Water Management

Athens homeowners increasingly adopt smart thermostats, lighting controls, and surveillance systems. HEP tailors tankless installations to mesh with these ecosystems through Wi-Fi–enabled controllers, open API connections, and voice-assistant support.

Smart Thermostatic Control for Varied Demand

  • Schedules that lower output temperature during daytime absences
  • Geofencing that triggers pre-heating when occupants approach
  • Real-time leak detection alerts pushed to mobile devices
  • Usage analytics displayed in kilowatt-hours and gallons for conservation tracking

Integrating data from other smart devices, the system can anticipate high-demand periods—like laundry cycles and evening showers—adjusting burner output in advance.

Acoustic Considerations and Noise Control

Though quieter than storage tanks, high-velocity burners and internal fans can still generate sound. In compact Athens townhomes, noise mitigation enhances comfort.

Steps HEP Takes to Minimize Operational Noise

  • Mounting units on anti-vibration pads when attached to shared walls
  • Routing vent pipe brackets through resilient grommets to reduce resonance
  • Using acoustic caulk around wall penetrations
  • Balancing combustion airflow to prevent whistling at high BTU levels

These techniques keep decibel levels roughly on par with a household refrigerator, an important factor for nursery rooms or adjacent home offices.

Retrofitting Historic Athens Residences

Five Points and Cobbham boast Craftsman and Victorian homes that predate modern plumbing layouts. Retrofitting here requires delicacy.

Hidden Obstacles Behind Plaster and Lathe Walls

  • Narrow wall cavities complicate condensate line routing
  • Vintage knob-and-tube wiring may demand electrical upgrades
  • Lead or galvanized pipes necessitate replacement to handle higher flow rates
  • Limited crawlspace access calls for creative venting paths

HEP’s teams deploy borescopes to inspect concealed areas before drilling, preserving historic fabric while ensuring code compliance.

Advanced Safety Features in Modern Tankless Units

Current-generation tankless heaters incorporate multiple redundancies:

  • Flame failure sensors that cut gas in milliseconds
  • Overheat limiters monitoring heat exchanger surfaces
  • Anti-scald algorithms adjusting outlet temperature if flow drops suddenly
  • Integrated carbon monoxide detectors that disable operation upon detection
  • Child-lock control panels preventing accidental adjustments

HEP validates these safety circuits with systematic tests and documents their baseline readings for future reference.

Local Compliance and Inspection Landscape

Athens-Clarke County conducts rigorous inspections aligned with the International Fuel Gas Code and the International Plumbing Code. Inspectors focus on:

  • Vent termination distances from windows and soffit vents
  • Proper slope for condensate drain lines to sanitary sewer connections
  • Gas shutoff valve accessibility within six feet of the appliance
  • Adequate combustion air volume in confined spaces

HEP schedules inspections to coincide with phases of renovation, ensuring walls are left open until approvals are granted, reducing rework risk.

Typical Installation Timeline Breakdown

  1. Site visit and load calculation: 1–2 hours
  2. Permit filing and approval wait: 1–3 business days
  3. Old tank drain, disconnect, and removal: 2–3 hours
  4. Gas and water line modifications: 3–5 hours
