FAQs
Why is water purification important in Winchester?
Winchester’s mains supply is drawn mainly from chalk aquifers, giving the city some of the hardest water in Hampshire—typically 250–300 mg/L of calcium carbonate. While perfectly safe to drink, this hardness leads to limescale build-up, cloudy hot drinks and the need for more detergents. In addition, chlorine used for disinfection and trace levels of agricultural nitrates from the River Itchen valley can affect taste and odour. A professionally specified purification system tackles these issues, delivering cleaner, better-tasting water, prolonging appliance life and reducing scale throughout your plumbing.
What types of water purification systems do you install?
We offer three main solutions, each tailored after a free on-site water test: 1. Whole-house softeners – ion-exchange units that remove hardness ions before the water enters your pipework. 2. Under-sink reverse-osmosis (RO) filters – multi-stage systems that strip out up to 99 % of dissolved solids, chlorine, heavy metals and nitrates, providing premium drinking water from a dedicated tap. 3. Point-of-entry carbon/UV filtration – a compact cartridge plus ultraviolet chamber that eliminates chlorine taste, micro-organisms and organic compounds for properties on private boreholes. We can combine technologies (e.g., softener + RO) for maximum protection.
How much maintenance is required and what does it involve?
Maintenance is simple and can be done by the homeowner or scheduled with our annual service plan: • Water softeners – replenish tablet salt every 4–6 weeks and book a resin clean / valve check once a year. • RO systems – change pre-filters every 6–12 months, the RO membrane every 2–3 years, and sanitise the storage tank annually. • UV units – replace the UV lamp yearly and the quartz sleeve every 24 months. During a service visit we test hardness, TDS, flow rate and sanitise housings, ensuring your system continues to meet BS EN 817 and WRAS standards.
Will a purification system remove hardness and limescale completely?
A correctly sized ion-exchange water softener will reduce calcium and magnesium to below 50 ppm—effectively eliminating new limescale. Existing deposits inside kettles and boilers will gradually soften and can be flushed out. If you choose a reverse-osmosis system alone, hardness is removed only at the drinking-water tap, so we generally recommend pairing RO with a whole-house softener to protect pipes, heating elements and bathrooms from scale.
How long does installation take and will it disrupt my home?
Most domestic installations are completed in half a day: • Whole-house softener – 3–4 hours; we fit a bypass loop so you never lose water supply. • Under-sink RO – 1–2 hours; we drill for the dedicated faucet and run a drain line to the trap. • UV/carbon POE system – 2–3 hours. Our engineers use dust sheets and isolation valves to keep the workspace tidy. Water is off for no more than 30 minutes, and we always commission the unit, test output water and give you a quick-start guide before leaving.
Are your products certified and what guarantees do you offer?
All equipment is WRAS-approved for use in UK plumbing systems and manufactured to ISO 9001. Our softeners use NSF-certified resin, and RO units carry NSF/ANSI 58 performance certification. UV chambers meet BS EN 14897 for drinking-water disinfection. We provide a 10-year warranty on mineral tanks, 5 years on control valves and 2 years on electronic components. Labour and parts are covered for the first 12 months, and extended maintenance contracts are available for worry-free ownership.
