FAQs
What is a concealed cistern and how does it save space?
A concealed cistern is a slim, fully-sealed water tank that sits out of sight—inside a wall cavity, behind a false wall, or within a furniture unit—while the toilet pan is mounted in front. Because the bulky ceramic cistern is removed from view, the projection of the toilet into the room is reduced by 100–180 mm compared with close-coupled toilets. This frees up valuable floor area, makes small bathrooms feel larger, and creates a clean, minimalist look with fewer surfaces to clean.
Can a concealed cistern be retrofitted into my existing bathroom?
Yes, in most cases our plumbers can retrofit a concealed cistern without a full bathroom remodel. We first inspect wall construction, waste-pipe route, and floor strength. Timber stud, metal stud, and some solid walls can all accept a steel frame and cistern box. Where depth is limited, we can build a slim false wall (as little as 90 mm) or use a furniture unit. Pipework is re-routed inside the framing and the wall is re-finished with moisture-resistant board and tiles. For solid concrete walls, we may recommend a low-profile back-to-wall WC unit instead.
Are concealed cisterns difficult to maintain and access for repairs?
Modern concealed cisterns are designed with maintenance in mind. The flush plate doubles as an access panel; removing it gives you a hand-sized opening to reach the fill valve, flush valve, and service isolation valve. Most common tasks—adjusting water level, replacing the inlet seal, or swapping the dual-flush valve—can be completed through this aperture without removing tiles or the toilet. All parts are standard, widely available, and push-fit for quick replacement. For major repairs, the entire cistern can slide out once the pan is detached, but this is rarely necessary.
What flushing options and water-saving features are available with concealed cisterns?
Our cisterns come with factory-set dual-flush volumes—typically 3 litres for a short flush and 6 litres for a full flush—cutting water use by up to 50 %. Users can fine-tune volumes on site. Pneumatic or mechanical flush plates are offered in dozens of finishes (chrome, matte black, brushed brass, glass, etc.). Touchless sensor plates are also available for hygienic, hands-free operation. Soft-closing lids and rimless pans further enhance cleanliness and efficiency.
How long does installation of a concealed cistern and wall-hung toilet take?
A straight swap in a stud wall generally takes one working day: morning removal of the old suite and rough-in of the frame and pipework, followed by afternoon wall boarding, waterproofing, and temporary reinstatement of the toilet for overnight use. Tiling and final fix (flush plate, seat adjustment, silicone sealing) add another half-day once adhesive has cured. If a false wall needs building or electrics are involved (for bidet seats or sensor flushes), allow 2–3 days in total.
Do concealed cisterns meet building regulations, and what warranty is provided?
All frames and cisterns we supply carry WRAS approval for potable-water safety and include a UKCA mark under the Construction Products Regulation. Installation is performed to Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 and Part H of the Building Regulations for drainage. Frames are load-tested to 400 kg (63 stone) for wall-hung pans. Cisterns and mechanical parts come with a 5-year manufacturer’s warranty, extendable to 10 years when registered. Our workmanship is guaranteed for 12 months and we provide a completion certificate for your records.
