FAQs

What is a concealed-tank toilet and how does it differ from a conventional close-coupled toilet?

A concealed-tank (also called in-wall or concealed-cistern) toilet hides the water cistern behind the wall or inside a furniture module, leaving only the pan and flush plate visible. This creates a cleaner look, saves up to 200 mm of floor space and makes the exterior of the toilet easier to clean. Conventional close-coupled toilets have the cistern sitting on the back of the pan, so they project further into the room and all plumbing is visible.

Can a concealed-cistern system be installed in my existing Seymour home or is it only for new builds?

Retro-fitting is usually possible in both brick-veneer and stud-framed houses in Seymour, provided we can create a 90–120 mm wall cavity or install a slim in-wall frame in front of the existing wall. Solid masonry walls often require a nib wall to be built. During our free site inspection we check wall depth, waste location and structural elements, then advise whether simple framing, minor carpentry or more extensive remodeling is needed. More than 70 % of our concealed-tank installations are upgrades in lived-in homes rather than new builds.

How long will the upgrade or replacement take, and will I be without a toilet for long?

For a straight swap from an old concealed unit to a new one, the job generally takes 3–4 hours and you can use the toilet the same evening. A first-time conversion from a close-coupled toilet normally requires: 1) framing and plumbing rough-in (half day), 2) sheeting/tiling (by owner’s tiler or our team, one day to set), and 3) final fit-off (1–2 hours). We usually install a temporary pan so you are never without a working toilet overnight.

How much does a concealed-tank upgrade cost in Seymour and what is included?

Most installations fall between $1,600 and $2,800 inc. GST. The price covers the in-wall frame and WELS 4-star cistern, your choice of back-to-wall pan, soft-close seat, dual-flush plate, licensed plumbing labour, removal of the old toilet, and council compliance certificate. Additional costs can arise for wall framing, tiling, asbestos removal or relocating the waste outlet—these are quoted up-front after our inspection.

How do you access the cistern for maintenance if it’s hidden in the wall?

All major components—fill valve, flush valve and inlet filter—are reachable through the flush plate opening without cutting the wall. The plate lifts off by hand, giving a servicing window roughly 180 × 130 mm. We install reputable brands (Geberit, Caroma, Roca) that supply spare parts locally. Your installation comes with a 10-year manufacturer’s warranty on the cistern tank and a 1-year labour warranty from our Seymour plumbing team.

Are concealed-tank toilets water-efficient and compliant with Australian plumbing codes?

Yes. The cisterns we use carry a 4-star WELS rating (4.5 L full / 3 L half flush) and meet AS/NZS 6400 for water efficiency. Our Plumbers Registration Board licence (Vic) ensures all work complies with AS 3500 and the NCC. On completion you’ll receive a Victorian Certificate of Compliance, which protects your warranty and can be required for home insurance claims.
