FAQs
What is the main difference between copper and PEX piping, and which material should I choose?
Copper is a rigid metal pipe that has been used for decades; it is extremely durable, resists UV light, and can handle very high temperatures. PEX (cross-linked polyethylene) is a flexible plastic tubing that installs quickly, resists scale and corrosion, and performs well in freezing conditions because it can expand slightly without bursting. Most modern repipes use PEX for its lower cost and faster installation, but copper may be preferable where pipes will be exposed to sunlight, extreme heat, or where local code or personal preference favors a metal option. During our in-home consultation a Reliance licensed plumber will inspect your plumbing, discuss your budget and priorities, and recommend the best material—or a combination of both—for your project.
Why should I upgrade from old galvanized, polybutylene, or CPVC pipes?
Galvanized steel corrodes from the inside out, reducing water pressure and releasing rust into your water. Polybutylene, widely installed between 1978-1995, is prone to sudden failure because chlorine in municipal water weakens the pipe walls. Older CPVC can become brittle and crack as it ages. Upgrading to new copper or PEX eliminates these hidden risks, improves flow rates, and protects your home from costly water damage. A modern piping system also raises property value and ensures compliance with current plumbing codes.
How long does a whole-home repipe with Reliance take, and will I have to leave my house?
Most single-family homes can be completely repiped in 1–3 days with PEX or 2–5 days with copper, depending on house size and accessibility. Our team works room by room, keeping interruptions to a minimum. Water is typically shut off only during working hours and restored every evening, so you can stay in the home throughout the project. We cover floors and furniture, cut the smallest possible access holes, and include drywall patching in our quote so your walls are left paint-ready when we’re finished.
Is PEX safe for drinking water and does it affect taste or odor?
Yes. All PEX tubing installed by Reliance is third-party certified to NSF/ANSI 61 for potable water safety and NSF/ANSI 372 for low lead content. Numerous studies show no health risks when PEX is installed correctly and flushed before use. While some customers notice a faint plastic odor during the first few days, it dissipates quickly. If you’re sensitive, we can perform an extended flush after installation to remove any residual manufacturing oils.
How much does a copper or PEX repipe cost and what financing options are available?
Costs vary with pipe material, house size, story count, and local code requirements. As a rough guide, a typical 2-bathroom single-story home might range from $4,000–$6,500 with PEX and $7,000–$10,000 with copper. Every project is unique, so we provide a free, no-obligation written estimate after an on-site assessment. Reliance offers several financing plans, including 0% interest promotions and low-monthly-payment options, subject to credit approval, so you can spread the cost over 12–120 months.
What kind of warranty and post-installation support does Reliance provide?
PEX repipes come with a 25-year manufacturer’s warranty on the tubing and a 10-year Reliance labor warranty. Copper repipes carry a 50-year manufacturer’s warranty and the same 10-year labor coverage. All work is performed by licensed, insured plumbers and inspected by local code officials. If you experience any leaks or issues, simply call our 24/7 service line; we will dispatch a technician at no charge during the warranty period. We also provide a detailed completion packet with permit documentation and warranty certificates for your records or for future home resale.
