FAQs
What is reverse-osmosis (RO) water purification and how does it work?
Reverse-osmosis is a filtration process that forces mains water through a semi-permeable membrane under pressure. The membraneâs microscopic pores (â0.0001 Âľm) block up to 99 % of dissolved salts, heavy metals, chlorine by-products, micro-plastics, bacteria and viruses, allowing only pure HâO molecules to pass through. The result is exceptionally clean, fresh-tasting water straight from your own tap in Mascot.
Why should Mascot households consider installing an RO system instead of standard carbon filters?
Standard carbon cartridges are excellent at removing chlorine taste and odour, but they cannot reduce total dissolved solids (TDS), fluoride, nitrates or most heavy metals. Mascotâs water, while safe, still picks up contaminants from ageing pipes and urban run-off. An RO membrane gives an extra barrier that dramatically lowers TDS and health-related impurities, delivering bottled-quality water without ongoing plastic waste or supermarket costs.
How often do the RO membrane and pre-filters need to be replaced?
In typical Mascot households the sediment and carbon pre-filters should be changed every 6â12 months, depending on water usage and local sediment levels. The RO membrane itself lasts 2â3 years when pre-filters are maintained. We provide a reminder service and can schedule filter changes with your annual plumbing check to keep the system performing at peak efficiency.
Will an RO system waste a lot of water?
Modern high-efficiency membranes we install in Mascot operate at a 1:1 to 2:1 waste-to-pure-water ratio, far lower than older 4:1 units. We can further reduce waste by adding a permeate pump or plumbing the concentrate line to garden irrigation or toilet cisterns, turning what would be waste into useful greywater.
Is reverse-osmosis water too acidic or does it remove healthy minerals?
RO does reduce mineral content, which slightly lowers pH. To address this we offer post-filtration remineralisation cartridges that add back healthy calcium and magnesium, raising pH to a neutral 7.0â7.5. The result is balanced, great-tasting water akin to premium spring waterâideal for drinking, cooking and coffee machines.
What is involved in getting an RO system installed in Mascot and how long does it take?
Installation typically takes 2â3 hours. Our licensed plumber will mount the compact RO unit under your kitchen sink, connect it to the cold-water line, drill a discrete faucet hole (or use an existing soap-dispenser opening), and route the drain saddle to the waste line. We pressure-test, sanitise the system and provide a demonstration on filter changes and sanitisation. All work is backed by a 10-year workmanship guarantee and WaterMark-certified components to comply with NSW plumbing regulations.
