FAQs
What is a video-inspection camera and how does it help diagnose main line plumbing issues?
A video-inspection camera is a flexible fibre-optic cable fitted with a high-definition camera head and LED lighting. The device is fed through an existing clean-out or vent and transmits real-time footage to a monitor above ground. This allows our Mascot plumbers to see the interior condition of your sewer or storm-water main line without excavation, pinpoint the exact location of blockages, cracks, tree-root intrusions, collapsed sections or pipe ‘bellies’, and record the depth and direction for precise repair planning.
What signs indicate I should book a camera inspection of my main line in Mascot?
Persistent or unexplained plumbing problems are the main triggers. These include recurring drain blockages, slow draining fixtures throughout the house, gurgling noises in pipes, foul sewer odours, wastewater backing up into tubs or floor wastes, lush or soggy patches in the yard, and any home built before 1990 with original clay or cast-iron pipes. If you are buying a property in Mascot, a pre-purchase camera inspection is also strongly recommended.
How long does a typical main line camera inspection take and do I need to prepare anything?
For an average single-dwelling sewer main up to 40 metres, the inspection itself usually takes 30–60 minutes. Please clear any stored items blocking access to the external clean-out or the toilet that will be removed for entry. Refrain from using water during the inspection so we have a clear view. Our technician will handle the rest, including set-up, video recording and on-site review of the footage with you.
Will a camera inspection damage my pipes or require digging up my yard?
No. The process is completely non-destructive. The camera cable is designed to glide through PVC, copper, clay and cast-iron lines without scratching or exerting pressure. We insert it through an existing access point, so no digging is involved. If your system lacks a clean-out, we can temporarily remove a toilet or install a small access port with minimal disturbance.
What types of problems can the camera detect and how accurate is the locator?
The camera can identify tree-root invasions, cracks, holes, offset joints, collapsed sections, pipe corrosion, grease or scale build-ups, foreign objects and incorrect pipe grading. An integrated sonde (radio transmitter) lets us trace the camera head above ground with an electronic locator, giving depth and position readings accurate to within about 30 cm. This accuracy means we only excavate the exact spot that needs repair.
How much does a sewer main line camera inspection cost in Mascot and what’s included?
For most Mascot residential properties the service is priced between $250 and $450. The price includes up to 40 metres of HD video inspection, electronic line tracing, a USB or cloud link to the footage, a written condition report, and a consultation outlining repair or maintenance options. Extra costs apply if we need to remove and reset a toilet, inspect additional lines, or travel beyond 40 metres. If hydro-jet clearing or pipe relining is required, we provide an obligation-free quote on the spot.
