FAQs
What are the most common causes of a leaking radiator?
In Manchester homes, the usual culprits are corrosion inside the radiator panel, worn or perished rubber seals on the valve tails, loose bleed valves, pin-holes caused by sludge build-up, and damaged pipe joints where the radiator connects to the system. Occasionally, leaks arise after accidental knocks or DIY decorating. Our engineers will isolate the exact source before recommending a fix.
Is a leaking radiator classed as an emergency?
If the leak is more than a slow drip or if water is spreading across the floor and threatening electrics, it should be treated as an emergency and the water supply to the heating circuit should be turned off immediately. Even a small leak can corrode nearby pipework and flooring, so we recommend booking a same-day visit whenever possible. We offer 24/7 call-outs across Greater Manchester for urgent radiator leaks.
Can I still run my central heating if one radiator is leaking?
It is safest to switch off the heating and, if possible, isolate the leaking radiator using the two valves at either end (turn them fully clockwise). Running the system while water is escaping can drop boiler pressure, trigger a lock-out fault, and cause further damage. Once isolated, you can top the boiler up to its normal pressure and use the rest of the heating until an engineer arrives — but this should only be a temporary measure.
How quickly can you attend a leaking radiator in Manchester?
For emergency leaks we aim to arrive within 1–2 hours anywhere inside the M60 and within 4 hours for surrounding areas such as Stockport, Oldham, and Bolton. For non-urgent bookings, we can usually schedule a visit the same or next working day. All vans carry common radiator valves, tails, and seal kits so most repairs are completed on the first visit.
Will the whole radiator need replacing or can it be repaired?
About 70% of leaks we see are fixed without changing the radiator. Re-sealing valve tails, tightening or replacing bleed valves, or fitting a new TRV (thermostatic valve) often stops the leak. If the panel itself is corroded or pin-holed, replacement is the safest long-term option because patch repairs rarely last. We will always explain the pros and cons and provide a no-obligation quote before proceeding.
How much does it cost to repair or replace a leaking radiator in Manchester?
A standard call-out and repair such as re-sealing a valve or changing a bleed screw typically costs £80–£120, including parts and labour. Replacing a radiator like-for-like usually ranges from £180–£250, depending on size and style. Designer or column radiators and complex pipe alterations can be higher. All prices are quoted up-front, include VAT, and come with a 12-month workmanship guarantee.
