FAQs
Why should I consider upgrading the existing pipes in my Manchester property?
Older pipework—especially lead, galvanised steel or early copper—can corrode, leak and even contaminate your water supply. A pipe upgrade improves water quality, raises system reliability, boosts flow and pressure, and reduces the risk of costly emergency repairs. It can also add value to your home and bring it in line with today’s building standards.
What pipe materials do your Manchester plumbers recommend for modern upgrades?
For internal hot and cold water we typically specify premium PEX or full-bore Type L copper, both WRAS-approved and resistant to corrosion. For incoming mains we use MDPE (medium-density polyethylene) because it is durable and compatible with United Utilities’ service pipes. Each material is chosen on a room-by-room basis to balance longevity, performance, noise reduction and budget.
How long does a full pipe replacement usually take?
A two-bed terrace with good access usually takes 2–3 working days. Larger semis and detached homes average 4–5 days, while complex period properties can run to a week. We plan work in phases, replacing sections floor-by-floor to keep as much of your home operational as possible and to minimise disruption.
Will my water be off for the entire project, and do I need to move out?
No. We isolate and drain only the section we’re actively working on, so the total water-off time is normally 2–4 hours per day. You can stay in the property throughout; we always leave at least one functioning WC and cold tap in service overnight. If a full shutdown is unavoidable, we agree the timing with you in advance and supply temporary bottled water.
How much does a pipe upgrade cost in Manchester?
Prices depend on property size, pipe routes and material choice, but as a guide: a small flat starts around £1,200–£1,800; a typical three-bed semi ranges from £2,500–£4,000; larger or listed homes can exceed £6,000. All quotes include labour, materials, making good and certified pressure testing. We provide a fixed written estimate after a free on-site survey.
Do I need building regulations approval or other permits for a pipe upgrade?
Internal hot- and cold-water pipe alterations usually fall under ‘minor works’, so full Building Control sign-off isn’t required. However, replacing a lead service pipe, moving the stop tap or increasing mains size must be notified to United Utilities and comply with Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999. As WaterSafe-approved plumbers, we handle all notifications, pressure testing certificates and, where needed, Building Notice submissions on your behalf.
