FAQs
What exactly is a back-to-wall toilet and how does it differ from close-coupled or wall-hung models?
A back-to-wall (BTW) toilet has the pan fixed to the floor with its rear surface flush against the bathroom wall or a furniture unit. The cistern is hidden inside a purpose-made WC unit or within a false wall/duct, so only the bowl and flush plate are visible. In a close-coupled toilet the cistern sits directly on the pan, while in a wall-hung toilet the whole pan is suspended off the floor on a steel frame. BTW models give the minimal look of a wall-hung pan but keep floor mounting, which avoids the extra structural work a wall-hung frame needs.
What preparation is needed before you install a back-to-wall toilet in my Lancing property?
Before our plumbers arrive we ask you to clear the bathroom area and confirm that the stop-cock is accessible so we can safely isolate the water. We carry out a free pre-installation survey to check floor construction, waste-pipe position, water-inlet location and the space available for the concealed cistern. Any minor carpentry (e.g. trimming the WC unit or boxing-in pipework) is planned at this stage so there are no surprises on the day of fitting.
Can I swap my existing close-coupled toilet for a back-to-wall model without moving all the pipework?
In most cases, yes. Because the new pan is still floor-standing, the soil pipe usually only needs a short pan connector or offset bend. The water feed can be rerouted discreetly behind the furniture unit or stud wall. During our survey we determine whether your current 110 mm soil outlet height and direction will line up with the new pan. If a larger adjustment is needed—such as lowering the branch or core-drilling a new outlet—we explain the options and costs in advance.
What benefits will I gain by upgrading to a back-to-wall toilet with a concealed cistern?
• Space & style: Hiding the cistern creates a slimmer profile that makes even small bathrooms feel larger and more contemporary. • Easier cleaning: With fewer exposed surfaces, dust and grime have less to cling to, so a quick wipe keeps the area hygienic. • Quieter flushing: Modern pneumatic or cable-operated cisterns are foam-insulated, reducing refill noise. • Adjustable height: When mounted in furniture the finished seat height can be tailored to the user, useful for accessibility. • Water efficiency: We fit WRAS-approved dual-flush cisterns (typically 3/6 L) that help cut water bills and meet current UK Building Regulations.
How long will the replacement take and will my bathroom be out of action?
A straight ‘swap-out’—removing the old pan, fitting a new BTW pan, installing a ready-made cistern unit, and making good silicone seals—takes around 3–4 hours. If additional work such as constructing a false wall, rerouting waste, or tiling is required, allow a full day. We always leave you with at least one operational WC by close of day, even on more involved projects, so disruption is minimal.
Do you supply, fit and remove the old toilet, and what warranty do you provide?
Yes. Our Lancing team can supply quality brands such as Roper Rhodes, Tavistock and Ideal Standard, or we’re happy to fit a customer-supplied pan and cistern if they meet UK standards. We take away and recycle the old toilet and packaging at no extra charge. All labour is covered by a 12-month workmanship guarantee, while the cistern mechanisms and ceramics carry the manufacturer’s 5–25 year warranties. Should any issues arise, a local engineer will return promptly to resolve them.
