What is trenchless sewer line repair, and how does it work?
Trenchless repair is a minimally invasive method of fixing or replacing damaged main sewer lines without digging long, open trenches through your yard or driveway. Technicians access the pipe from one or two small entry points and use specialized equipment to either re-line the existing pipe with a cured-in-place epoxy sleeve (CIPP) or pull a new HDPE pipe through the old one (pipe bursting). Both techniques restore full flow capacity and structural integrity while leaving the surface virtually undisturbed.
When is trenchless repair a viable option for main line issues?
Trenchless methods are ideal for pipes that are cracked, corroded, infiltrated by roots, or slightly misaligned but still maintain a generally continuous path. They work on most clay, cast-iron, PVC, and Orangeburg lines from 2" to 36" in diameter. However, if the pipe has completely collapsed, is back-pitched, or has extensive offset joints, limited excavation may still be necessary. A camera inspection lets us confirm whether your line qualifies.
How long does a trenchless main line repair or replacement take?
Most residential jobs are completed in a single day. After setup, cleaning, and video confirmation, the actual lining or pipe-bursting process typically takes a few hours, followed by cure time (for CIPP) or reconnection of branch lines (for pipe bursting). Because there is little digging or soil backfill, there is virtually no time lost to landscape restoration, so you regain full use of your plumbing and property much sooner than with traditional excavation.
Will trenchless repair damage my yard, driveway, or landscaping?
Very little. We create one or two small access pits—usually near the house and the street connection—each roughly 3' x 4'. All machinery, liner, or replacement pipe is fed through these openings, so lawns, gardens, patios, and concrete surfaces remain intact. Once the work is finished, the pits are backfilled and sod or pavers are replaced, leaving only minor, localized disturbance compared with the long scar a conventional trench would create.
How durable are trenchless repair materials, and what is their expected lifespan?
Cured-in-place epoxy liners form a seamless, joint-free pipe rated for 50+ years, and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) replacement pipes used in bursting often carry a 100-year design life. Both materials are corrosion-resistant, root-proof, and meet ASTM standards. In most cases, your new line will outlast the original pipe by decades and comes with a transferable warranty (typically 10–20 years) for added peace of mind.
Is trenchless repair more expensive than traditional excavation?
The upfront price can be comparable or slightly higher than open-cut methods, but the overall project cost is often lower once you factor in surface restoration. With trenchless repair, you avoid repouring driveways, re-sodding large lawn areas, replacing landscaping, or repairing sprinkler systems. You also save on labor and time, reducing downtime for your household or business. For many property owners, those savings make trenchless the most cost-effective solution in the long run.
