FAQs
What is a comfort-height toilet and how is it different from a standard toilet?
A comfort-height toilet (also called ‘chair-height’ or ‘right-height’) has a seat height of 430–480 mm (17–19 inches) from floor to seat, whereas a standard toilet is usually about 400 mm (15 inches). The added height makes sitting down and standing up easier, especially for seniors, taller users, and people with limited mobility. Functionally, the flushing system and rough-in dimensions remain the same, so the main difference you’ll notice is improved ergonomics.
Will a comfort-height toilet fit the existing plumbing in my Cowan home?
In most cases, yes. Nearly all comfort-height models are designed with the same 12-inch rough-in that the majority of Cowan homes already have. During our site visit, we measure your rough-in, check water-supply placement, and confirm clearance around the toilet. If you have an unusual 10- or 14-inch rough-in, we can source compatible comfort-height models or install an offset flange to make everything line up.
Do I need to modify the floor or flange when upgrading to a comfort-height toilet?
Usually, no floor modifications are required. Because comfort-height toilets share the same footprint and bolt pattern as standard units, they sit on the existing flange without issue. We do, however, replace the wax ring, closet bolts, and supply line to ensure a watertight seal. If your current flange is damaged or too low, we’ll repair or raise it during the installation so the new toilet seats firmly and leak-free.
Are comfort-height toilets water-efficient and compliant with NSW regulations?
Yes. Modern comfort-height toilets carry the same WELS ratings as standard-height units, typically 4-star dual-flush (4.5 L full / 3 L half) or better. All models we install meet or exceed the Plumbing Code of Australia and Sydney Water requirements. Choosing a high-efficiency comfort-height toilet can reduce household water use by up to 50 L per person per day compared with older single-flush toilets.
How long does a toilet replacement take and will my bathroom be out of use?
A straightforward swap in Cowan takes about two hours: shut off water, drain and remove the old toilet, inspect/clean the flange, install the new unit, test for leaks, and caulk the base. Your bathroom is usable immediately after we finish, aside from avoiding heavy weight on the caulk bead for 24 hours. If additional repairs (flange, sub-floor rot) are needed, we’ll inform you and the job may take longer, but we always aim to minimise downtime.
What is the cost of upgrading to a comfort-height toilet and does it include disposal of the old unit?
Pricing depends on the model you choose, but most comfort-height toilet packages we install in Cowan range from $580 to $980, including the toilet, new seat, wax ring, bolts, supply line, labour, GST, and removal/disposal of your old toilet in accordance with EPA guidelines. We provide a fixed, written quote after an on-site assessment, so there are no surprise charges. Pensioner and senior discounts are available.
